To welcome the Dragon Boat Festival and the summer season of water sports, the Sports Bureau of Taichung City Government has launched the "Have Fun on the Water in Taichung" series. From May 23 to June 13, events will be held at the Dali Kangqiao Water Area and Area 5 of Fengyuan Huludun Park, featuring a wide range of experiences including canoeing, dragon boating, stand up paddleboarding, and music paddle cruises. The public is invited to get outdoors, get closer to the water, and experience the charm of Taichung’s summer sports scene along the city’s riverbanks.
The Sports Bureau stated that this year’s series offers a rich variety of activities. The Water Carnival will be held at Dali Kangqiao Waterfront Park on May 23 and 24, and again on May 30 and 31, with free canoe experiences open to the public. The event will also include water safety education, life jacket instruction, and basic paddling skills training, giving families with children a safe and enjoyable introduction to water sports.
On May 30, the Dragon Boat Tug of War Invitational will be held at Fengyuan Huludun Park, with on site team registration open that morning. On May 31, the SUP Music Paddle Cruise in the Riverside Floral City will follow, with registration available in multiple sessions throughout the day. In addition, a Dragon Boat and Canoe Experience Event will be held on June 13. Through these different types of water sports experiences, combined with the distinctive urban waterfront settings of Dali Kangqiao and Fengyuan Huludun Park, residents will be able to enjoy both the festive atmosphere of the Dragon Boat Festival and the appeal of Taichung’s summer water activities while staying active.
The Sports Bureau added that Mayor Shiow-Yen Lu has actively promoted the development of water sports. In southern Taichung, the Kangqiao Water Sports Training Center and the Boat House Management Center have already been established. In northern Taichung, the city has been gradually improving the training and promotional environment for water sports with Ruantaizixi in Fengyuan as a key base. In recent years, Taichung has also continued to demonstrate strong results in training water sports athletes. Taichung canoe athletes Chu-Han Chang, Li-Hung Liao, and Fu-Hua Chang have all qualified for the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games, highlighting the competitive strength of Taichung athletes in canoeing. The city government will continue to promote the development of water sports from multiple angles, from grassroots participation and athlete training to the creation of urban waterfront environments, encouraging residents to get closer to the water, develop sports skills, and further enrich Taichung’s diverse sporting culture.
The Sports Bureau reminds the public that the series of water activities may be adjusted flexibly based on on site weather conditions, water levels, and safety assessments. Participants are asked to follow staff instructions and work together to maintain the safety and quality of the events.
