Micron Technology opened its second advanced assembly and test facility in Taichung on October 15, expanding capacity to meet growing global demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in artificial intelligence (AI). The opening of Micron Advanced Assembly and Test Taiwan 2 (AATT2) marks another milestone in the company’s long-term investment in Taiwan. Further, it strengthens Taichung’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Completed approximately one year after construction began in September 2025, AATT2 will enhance Micron’s advanced packaging and testing capabilities for HBM, complementing its existing manufacturing and research operations in Taiwan. The new capacity will support the increasingly demanding memory requirements of AI and high-performance computing.
Micron employs approximately 15,000 people in Taiwan, including 12,000 in Taichung. Its cumulative investment in Taiwan exceeded NT$1.6 trillion as of June 2026, reflecting the island’s strategic importance within the company’s global operations.
Taichung has become Micron’s largest manufacturing base in Taiwan and a key global memory production hub. Following the opening of its first advanced assembly and test facility in 2023, the second facility further strengthens Taichung’s semiconductor industry cluster. It also complements TSMC’s plan for a new 1.4-nanometer fab at the Central Taiwan Science Park, reinforcing Taichung’s position in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Factory Operation Census, revenue from Taichung’s integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing industry rose from NT$243.2 billion in 2018 to NT$468.4 billion in 2024. Its share of the city’s total manufacturing revenue increased from approximately 11% to 19% over the same period. Based on recent growth trends, the city estimates that IC manufacturing revenue reached approximately NT$560 billion in 2025, up more than NT$300 billion from 2018.
Separately, data from the Central Taiwan Science Park Bureau indicate that the park’s IC industry revenue rose from approximately NT$514.7 billion in 2018 to NT$941.9 billion in 2025, an increase of NT$427.2 billion over seven years. Total park revenue grew from about NT$724.9 billion to NT$1,130.4 billion, and the IC industry’s share rose from about 71% to 83%.
The city’s precision manufacturing cluster is also expanding into AI and semiconductor supply chains. This year, Largan Precision has invested more than NT$8 billion in land and factory acquisitions in Nantun and Xitun districts. C SUN has invested NT$1.48 billion in a second plant at the Taichung City Precision Machinery Innovation Technology Park in Nantun to expand equipment production for AI and advanced packaging applications.
Taichung City Government Secretary-General Huang Chung-tien attended the opening on behalf of Mayor Lu Shiow-yen. Cooperation between Micron and the city extends beyond manufacturing investment to workforce development, sustainable transportation, and water conservation. Continued improvements to investment services, transportation, and living conditions aim to support business growth while helping employees and their families thrive in Taichung.
Taichung leads the nation with 378 companies approved to invest under the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Three Major Programs for Investing in Taiwan. In the third quarter of 2026, the city ranked first in four of eight economic indicators, marking its 22st consecutive quarter leading in at least four. It also ranked third in overall competitiveness for the second consecutive year in Global Views Monthly’s 2026 City Sustainable Competitiveness Survey.
With continued investment in advanced manufacturing and closer collaboration across industry and government, Taichung is strengthening its role as a key hub connecting Taiwan’s manufacturing expertise with global semiconductor and AI markets.
