The variety of Nuomici lychee features its thick flesh, delicate texture and a small-sized seed. Well received by consumers, the high-priced Nuomici lychee can be eaten fresh or processed into dried dessert. There are about200 hectares of land devoted to the cultivation of Nuomici lychees in Taichung. To diversify lychee species, improve lychee quality, and tell consumers how to select quality lychees, the Agriculture Bureau of Taichung City Government guided Dali District Farmers 'Associations hold on July 3at the loading depot of Dali District Farmers' Association the “Nuomici Lychee Evaluation and Competition”, to which84production and marketing groups of farmers were enrolled. After the judges tasted, evaluated, and scored all the contenders carefully, the Grand Prize was conferred to three winners, namely He Rui-Feng (何瑞豐), HU Xian-sun (胡獻衫) and Qiu Cheng-Yuan (邱成源); the First Prize went to five winners, including Chen Qiu-Lang (陳秋藍), Xu Li-Peng (徐立朋), Xie Wen-He (謝文鶴), Liu Jin-Zhong (劉進忠), and Liu Mu-Sheng (劉木生); and the Excellence Award was granted to another 15 winners.

The judges were composed of scholars and experts from the agricultural improvement stations and agricultural research institutions. They rated the Nuomici lychees by such criteria as the average weight of a single lychee, the number of lychee sin a single string, the shapes of lychees, the flavor and taste, the sugar contents, and the proportion of small-sized seeds. Each winner of the Grand Prize was awarded medal and prize money of NT$10, 000; each First Prize winner was given a medalandNT$5, 000; and an Excellence Award winner was granted a medalandNT$3,000.

Agriculture Bureau said that as an importantly Chee Cultivation area, Taichung City had1,987 hectares of lychee farms in 2013, among which only 200hectares were planted with Nuomici varieties, distributed in districts, such as Taiping, Wufeng, Dali, Shalu, Qingshui, Daya, Shenkang, Longjing, Fengyuan, Shihkang, and Beitun. Lychees are being harvested and it is peak reason for Nuomici lychees at the moment and the best time to try them. As their production quantity is small, consumers are advised to hurry up for the purchase.
