Drivers suspected or found to be driving under the influence of alcohol will be stopped by police officers for a breathalyzer test. If the breath alcohol concentration is 18 mg/L or more but less than 0.25 mg/L, or the blood alcohol concentration is 0.03% but less than 0.05%, the offender will have their vehicle impounded and must pay the necessary fines before being allowed to retrieve it. Other administrative penalties include suspension of license and driver's license, attendance of traffic safety courses, and different fines depending on the type of vehicle driven. In some cases, the driver's license may be revoked.

Individuals found with a breath alcohol concentration of 25 mg/L or more or a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05% or more will commit the crime of driving unsafely under the Criminal Code and may be arrested and prosecuted; and the vehicle will be impounded on the spot, the license will be suspended, a road traffic safety lecture will be given, and other administrative penalties will be imposed, with different fines depending on the type of vehicle driven. In some cases, the driver's license may be revoked.

The Taichung City Police Department will set up random checkpoints where police officers will stop vehicles and conduct breathalyzer tests on drivers.

It is recommended that if you have been drinking, please use public transportation or designate a sober driver to drive, in order to jointly maintain your own safety and that of other road users.
