Taichung's reading landscape is being upgraded once again! The Lobsang Library(羅布森圖書館)," a project funded by the private sector and actively promoted by the city government, held its groundbreaking ceremony on the 19th. Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen (盧秀燕市長)personally attended to express her gratitude to Mr. Wang Shih-Hsu(汪世旭董事長), Chairman of Lobsang Co., Ltd., for donating over NT$120 million to realize his vision of promoting reading and culture. The library will be donated to the city government as a public asset.
Mayor Lu stated that this project not only showcases an entrepreneur's cultural vision but also marks a significant milestone in the city's cultural policy. It fulfills her campaign promise from seven years ago to establish a library in Nantun District(臺中市南屯區).
Mayor Lu explained that Chairman Wang founded Lobsang Co. (羅布森公司) in 2001. Although Chairman Wang has been successful in the machinery industry, he has always remained devoted to reading and public welfare. In his youth, he worked at a bookstore and drew spiritual nourishment from reading. He later channeled this passion into cultural promotion. In 2013, he founded “Lobsang Books” (羅布森書蟲房), often referred to as “Taiwan's most beautiful bookstore,” in Xiwei Village, Wuri District (烏日區溪尾里). For ten years, he has worked tirelessly to promote reading in rural areas. Now, he is expanding his dream by planning to build the most beautiful and best library in the world.
Mayor Lu pointed out that the Lobsang Library is located in a prime area of Nantun. The site, originally designated for cultural and educational use, was later repurposed as a vehicle impound lot. After years of concern and suggestions from local representatives and residents, the city government decided to relocate the tow yard and revitalize the space. The city government and Chairman Wang proposed to promote cultural construction in the area, and Lobsang Library will soon become a major cultural landmark for Nantun. The library will be connected to the nearby 6.4-hectare Fengle Sculpture Park (豐樂雕塑公園), transforming it into a key community hub for reading, learning, socializing, and relaxation.
Mayor Lu also asked everyone present to give ten seconds of applause to Chairman Wang for his heartfelt donation. She described the Lobsang Library as a gift filled with the fragrance of books, one that will warm the city, touch hearts, and enrich citizens' reading lives. She also thanked Wu Chun-Shan (吳春山董事長), Chairman of Lee Ming Construction Co., Ltd. (麗明營造股份有限公司), for leading the construction team. Together, they aim to build a temple of knowledge that features both green architecture and comfortable reading spaces. The city government has allocated nearly NT$75 million for interior construction, aiming to complete the project by the end of 2026, ensuring quality and timely delivery. The goal is to allow residents—and the world—to experience the beauty of reading.
Legislative Yuan Vice President Johnny Chiang (立法院副院長江啟臣) stated that Chairman Wang's decade-long effort in Wuri to create the “never-closing, never-pausing” Lobsang Books is truly inspiring. He also praised Wang's previous donations, such as stair-lift chairs to the Fengyuan Huludun Cultural Center (豐原葫蘆墩文化中心), showing a warm-hearted and responsible entrepreneurial spirit. Libraries are more than just buildings; they are culturally rich spaces that represent a city's character and competitiveness. Reading ability is a city's competitive edge. In the future, Taichung will have 50 libraries—one in each administrative district—enabling the development of “library tours” and showcasing Taichung's rich cultural depth.
Cultural Affairs Bureau Director Chen Chia-chun (陳佳君局長) noted that the Lobsang Library is designed around the concept of a “green eco-library” with high vegetation coverage. It will be a building that harmonizes with the seasons. The surrounding area will feature various walking paths, and the library will offer outdoor learning and ecological tours. Visitors will be able to stroll through landscaped greenery, enjoy the seasonal colors, and experience a daily reading life close to nature.
