Borrow books at the library and take home clothes at the same time? This summer, the Shangfeng Branch of Taichung Public Library has launched a creative “Clothing Library” second-hand clothing exchange event. By creatively combining reading with the spirit of sustainability, the initiative allows visitors not only to discover books but also to uncover the “new stories” hidden in donated wardrobes. The event runs until August 31, inviting citizens to borrow books, exchange for clothes, and join in supporting environmental protection and reuse—giving worn clothes and read books a new lease on life.
Since its launch, the program has received widespread praise, with heartwarming scenes all around. One child excitedly said, “I want to pick a piece of clothing for my mom and dad too!”—a touching display of love and thoughtfulness. Parents also remarked, “Visiting the library isn’t just about reading; it’s also a chance to teach children to share and value resources. This is such a meaningful activity!”
Inspired by domestic and international practices such as “wardrobe sharing” and “clothing libraries,” the Shangfeng Branch Library introduced its first-ever book-for-clothes exchange this summer. Donated clothes are carefully sorted and displayed on the first floor in a mini clothing gallery. Visitors who borrow 10 books can choose one second-hand garment of their choice, suitable for adults or children. After borrowing books and selecting clothes, participants can also join a lucky draw. This activity is not just an exchange of items, but also a genuine practice of sustainability.
In addition to promoting creative reading initiatives, the Shangfeng Branch serves as a model of environmental sustainability. According to the Cultural Affairs Bureau, it is the first library in Taichung City built with a focus on “environmental education.” Since opening in 2022, its unique architectural design and public art installations have won multiple domestic and international awards. The branch also organizes diverse sustainability-focused activities to strengthen community education. In 2023, it implemented a “smart microgrid” system and adopted time- and zone-based strategies for lighting and air-conditioning to save energy, demonstrating concrete action toward sustainable development.
The Taichung Public Library emphasizes, “Reading inspires lives, while sustainability shapes the future.” The “Clothing Library” initiative embodies both. It transforms the library from a temple of books into the community’s warmest hub for environmental education. With just a piece of clothing and a library card, connections of love and kindness are woven throughout the city.
The event runs until August 31. Citizens are warmly invited to visit the Shangfeng Branch Library to “borrow books, exchange clothes,” and take part in promoting environmental sustainability. For more event details, please visit https://reurl.cc/mY355Y
