Ink Painting Master Tsai Yuo Reflects on Sixty Years! Huludun Art Feast Opens

The Huludun Cultural Center’s "ArtFengyuan Artist’s Invitational Exhibition" grandly presents this year's exhibition,  "Sixty Years in Ink Painting – The Growth and Transformation of Tsai Yuo’s Artistic Journey." This exhibition showcases the lifelong dedication of ink painting master Tsai Yuo, offering a profound reflection on nature and life. Running from October 10 to November 9, the exhibition is held in the first- and second-floor galleries of the Huludun Cultural Center. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the fluid world of ink wash and experience the harmonious interplay of time, nature, and spirit.

Deputy Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Zeng Nengting, attended the opening ceremony today and stated, "The 'Art. Fengyuan Artist’s Invitational Exhibition' has reached its 10th year since its inception. Each year, outstanding artists are invited to come together to showcase their profound life experiences and artistic energy, enriching Taichung's artistic and cultural vitality. With the opening of the Taichung Green Museumbrary on December 13th this year, the citizens of Taichung will have even more opportunities to engage with and appreciate the city's renewed appearance, imbued with artistic aesthetics and cultural heritage."

This time, we invited artist Tsai Yuo, who grew up surrounded by mountains and the misty forests of a utopian landscape that became the source of inspiration for his creative mindset. While in his third year at art college, he distinguished himself by winning first place at the National Art Exhibition. He later earned a master’s degree in art from Tsukuba University in Japan. Upon returning to Taiwan, he dedicated himself to teaching and mentored generations of aspiring artists. Serving as chair of the Department of Calligraphy and Painting at the National Taiwan University of Arts until his retirement, Tsai Yuo has devoted decades to ink wash creation. His ink wash art is not only a display of brush and ink techniques but also a journey of dialogue with nature and life.

The Huludun Cultural Center notes that the "Vivid Colors Series" was inspired by the vibrant hues of the four seasons during Tsai Yuo’s study abroad in Japan. The " Terraced Fields Series" captures the majestic mist and clouds encountered during his travels in Yuanyang, Yunnan. The "House Series," created after the devastating 921 earthquake that severely affected his hometown in Nantou, depicts the mountain town shrouded in mist and rain, with somber ink tones conveying deep sorrow and care. His representative work, "Misty Sun Moon Lake," portrays the ethereal beauty of a misty morning at Sun Moon Lake. The "Recent New Works Series" illustrates the landscapes of Nantou’s Puli after his retirement, where he transforms mountains and mist into a vibrant poetic realm, symbolizing the artist’s spiritual renewal after years of refinement.

Tsai Yuo mentions that his favorite verse is, "Walking to the end of the water, sitting and watching the clouds rise," from which he gains insight into life. When facing bottlenecks and difficulties, there is no need to feel burdened; a change in perspective can bring new hope. The mountains and waters of his hometown deeply move his soul. "Sitting and Watching the Clouds Rise" reflects a turning point and the philosophy of his life attitude, while "Carving Clouds and Bright Moon" depicts the serene nightscape of Puli Mountain Town. We sincerely invite art lovers and citizens to visit the exhibition, engage in a dialogue with the landscapes depicted by the artist, and experience the poetic and picturesque moments of rising clouds.
