Taichung City Government
Taichung Green Museumbrary—the country’s first cultural complex integrating an art museum and a library—will begin its three-week trial operation from October 28 to November 16. During this period, the Taichung Art Museum will open its public spaces and launch a series of events under the theme “Open Up: Numerous Ways to Meet Green Museumbrary.” The program features an educational exhibition for all ages highlighting the museum’s collections, a lecture by Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architects of SANAA, and an international forum gathering representatives from prominent cultural institutions both in Taiwan and abroad. Through these diverse and inspiring programs, the public is invited to experience the architectural beauty of the Green Museumbrary and the artistic vitality of the Taichung Art Museum.
“Open Up” Series — Cross-Disciplinary Performances Transform Architecture into an Artistic Platform
The “Open Up: Numerous Ways to Meet Green Museumbrary” series is curated by Lin Kun-Ying, co-founder of LuxuryLogico and also the exhibition’s curator. Reflecting the Green Museumbrary’s dual identity as both an art museum and a library, as well as its architectural transparency and fluidity, the exhibition centers around the theme “Inspiration Comes from Mutual Exchange.” Three groups of creators have been invited to develop new works inspired by the Green Museumbrary, presenting cross-disciplinary programs that span visual arts, performing arts, literature, and educational outreach, making the architectural space itself a dynamic platform for artistic dialogue.
Program highlights include “Variegated Light and Shadow,” a video installation by Japanese director Seiichi Hishikawa, inspired by the everyday scenes of Taichung; “The Boy, the Formosan Sika Deer, and the Green Museumbrary,” a literary project specially developed by Taichung-based author Kan Yao-Ming, complemented by a nighttime light installation; and “A Slow Stroll Through the Museum,” a collaborative performance created by performing artists Lin Yu-Ju and Tian Hsiao-Tzu, director Chen Kuan-Yu, sound creator Liao Hai-Ting, and costume designer Tsai Hao-Tien. Welcome to join the live performances on November 1 and November 8, or scan the QR code at the Green Museumbrary’s main lobby to view the performance video and follow the performers’ footsteps to explore the Museumbrary’s architectural spaces at your own pace.
In addition, a series of weekend public events awaits you. On November 2 and November 15, the “Inside Out: Sketching Marathon” will take place, featuring six artists who will lead participants in capturing the scenery around the Green Museumbrary using diverse media. Through in-person engagement and imagination, participants will experience the beauty of the architecture and its surrounding environment. On November 8, the “Paths of Inspiration: From Everyday Life to Our Museum” artist talk will bring together curator Lin Kun-Ying and creators Kan Yao-Ming, Seiichi Hishikawa, Lin Yu-Ju, Tian Hsiao-Tzu, and Chen Kuan-Yu. They will share their encounters with the Green Museumbrary and discuss how sensory experiences are transformed into artistic expression.
“Illuminating the Storeroom” Collection Educational Exhibition — Revealing the Everyday Work Behind Art Preservation
The collection educational exhibition “Illuminating the Storeroom” draws inspiration from the Green Museumbrary’s architectural feature of a visible storage space, extending this concept into its exhibition design. Breaking away from the traditional notion of sealed-off art storage, the exhibition allows visitors to glimpse behind the scenes of art preservation through three floor-to-ceiling windows that connect directly to the storage area. Using light as a cue, the exhibition symbolizes the opening of the storage space. Light also represents artistic inspiration, as well as an essential tool in environmental testing and artwork inspection prior to storage. By combining visible storage displays with engaging, educational interactive experiences, the exhibition unveils the life cycle of artworks—from creation and collection to preservation—offering visitors deeper insight into both the Taichung Art Museum’s collection and the diverse facades of art preservation.
Inaugural International Forum — Cultural Institutions from 10 Countries Join Forces to Shape Inclusive Cultural Landscapes
The “A Site of Encounters - Shaping Inclusive Cultural Landscapes” International Forum will be held from November 15 to 16, featuring four major themes: “Museums in Symbiosis with the City,” “Innovative Encounters of Art and Reading,” “Art as a Bridge for Inclusive Dialogue,” and “The Playful Forest Beyond the Museum.” The forum will bring together 13 directors and experts of major institutions from 10 countries, including Barbara Steiner, Director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation (Germany); Alicia Teng, Deputy Director of the Community and Access team at the National Gallery Singapore; Emmanuèle Payen Wouts, Head of Cultural Development and Cinema at the Bibliothèque publique d’information, Centre Pompidou (France); Guri Guri Henriksen, Curator at Norway’s National Museum; Andrea Zsutty, Director of the ZOOM Children’s Museum (Austria); Kazumi Kumagai, Curator at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Japan); as well as Lai Hsiang-Ling, Director of the New Taipei City Art Museum, and Wu Li-Chuan, Associate Researcher at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Together, these professionals will explore how cultural institutions can promote sustainable urban cultural development through cross-disciplinary collaboration, art education, and inclusive practices. Cultural professionals and the general public alike are warmly invited to take part in this forum.
