The resident team of the Tun District Art Center, Uni Percussion, will present its production Each Discovery Is a World of Its Own at the Experimental Theatre from November 15 to 16. This brand-new sound project is specially designed for children, inviting audiences of all ages to open their ears, relax their eyes, and immerse in the world of sound for an auditory adventure. A special group offer for four is now available—families are warmly invited to join and let their ears take center stage as creativity and imagination run free.
According to the Taichung City Government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau, the resident team Uni Percussion is composed of young artists who focus on sound-based creation. This year, the group was selected as one of Taichung’s Outstanding Performing Arts Teams and was also nominated for the Taishin Arts Award. Starting from percussion, their creative practice extends into theater, dance, and installation art, exploring the shared language across artistic disciplines through cross-genre collaboration. Their representative works include Temple of Resonance, Temple Fair with Myself and Plato’s Cave. This time, the Sound Project for Children - “Each Discovery Is a World of Its Own” invites audiences to explore the world through hearing at the Tun District Art Center, where children can discover their own unique universe of voices and tones.
Uni Percussion’s Artistic Director, Hsueh Yung-Chih, shared that the inspiration for Each Discovery Is a World of Its Own originated from the 2021 sound installation exhibition “Sound Forest—The Secret Base of the Ear Monsters.” During the exhibition, he observed the focused and curious expressions of children exploring sounds alongside their parents, which led him to ponder: “If I were a kid, how would I hope adults would accompany me in discovering the world?” Hence, Hsueh invited resident artist Tso Han-Chieh—who has long been devoted to creating theater for young audiences—to serve as playwright and director. Centered on sound and play, the performance deconstructs five types of environmental sounds and incorporates physical interaction to guide both children and adults in rediscovering the wonder of “hearing something for the first time.” Through the performance, listening and expression become the starting point for children to build confidence and understand the world around them.
The Tun District Art Center further noted that Uni Percussion will also host a sound collection workshop, “Listening to All Things,” on November 23. The workshop invites participants to reconnect with the sounds of daily life and their associated cultural memories.
