Taichung City Government

The Taichung Green Museumbrary, an international-level new cultural landmark, officially opened in December last year. As a public cultural venue that integrates art and reading, the institution collaborated with Apu Jan, Creative Director of the international fashion brand APUJAN, to design custom-made uniforms exclusively for the Green Museumbrary. Centered on the building’s gray-and-white color palette, the uniform design draws inspiration from the co-located museum and library, as well as concepts of interdisciplinarity and fluidity. The resulting design language achieves both strong visual identity and overall coherence. Beyond providing clear service identification, the uniforms respond to the architectural character of the venue and further extend and reinforce the Green Museumbrary’s brand ethos.
To ensure that the designs closely align with the practical needs of staff, the design team conducted multiple interviews with personnel from both the art museum and the library throughout the creative process to confirm their needs. The resulting uniforms balance clear service identification with a professional image, while also addressing the functional differences in attire required by the two institutions. The design team employed varying shades of gray and minimalist lines, integrated with the Green Museumbrary’s visual identity system, in an effort to transcend the conventional boundaries between uniforms and architectural space. Through this approach, the uniforms embody the Green Museumbrary’s spirit of interdisciplinarity and fluidity.
For the art museum, the upper portion of the work attire is accented with irregular blue ink-flow patterns, symbolizing the free flow of artistic creation. In contrast, the library uniforms adopt deep gray as the primary tone, with dark blue accent colors at the pockets and cuffs, conveying a style that is calm, clean, and highly recognizable.
Lai Yi-hsin, Director of the Taichung Art Museum, noted that the uniform designs thoughtfully incorporate architectural elements and conceptual ideas of the building, achieving a balance between practicality and aesthetics. In addition to echoing the clean tonal quality of the architectural space, the irregular blue cuts allow staff and volunteers, as they move through the venue, to resemble flowing brushstrokes of color within the space—conveying to visitors a sense of anticipation for encounters with art while also enhancing service identification. Meanwhile, Tseng Hui-chun, Director of the Taichung Public Library, pointed out that the library uniforms, characterized by a dark color palette and crisp lines, convey professionalism and elegance. They balance visual appeal with functionality and reflect the tranquil atmosphere inherent to spaces dedicated to reading.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau added that designer Apu Jan is renowned for storytelling through fashion. Since 2013, he has presented new collections each season at London Fashion Week and has designed distinctive work uniforms for numerous international brands and cultural institutions. In this project, he adopted a cross-disciplinary perspective to distill the unique character of both the art museum and the library. Drawing on the building’s light gray architectural palette, he transformed the lines of books and paintings into a sartorial language. Through a design that is concise yet composed, the uniforms aim to foster a welcoming and inclusive service atmosphere, enabling staff and volunteers to naturally embody and express the spirit of the venue in their daily work.
