The adaptive reuse project of the national monument "Taichung State Hall" continues to advance at full speed. To demonstrate the city government's determination to promote cultural revival in the Old City district, Li Chih-fu, Director of the Taichung City Cultural Heritage Department, led a team to the construction site on May 5 for supervision. The team conducted an on-site inspection of the progress of interior decoration, outdoor landscaping, and new building construction, while strictly demanding overall construction quality and site safety, striving to complete the project this year (2026) on schedule and with high quality.
During the inspection, Director Li Chih-fu of the Cultural Heritage Department pointed out: "Taichung State Hall is not only an important historical asset of the city but also carries the collective memory of all citizens." Having served as Taichung’s administrative core for many years, Taichung State Hall holds an irreplaceable historical status. To properly revitalize this century-old building, the total budget for this adaptive reuse project is approximately NT$420 million, all of which was self-funded and allocated by the city government, demonstrating a high level of emphasis and resolve. The project was commissioned to Kuo Chun-pei Architects for design and supervision, with Yutian Construction Co., Ltd. handling the construction. Upon completion, the Cultural Affairs Bureau will move in and utilize the space, which will be paired with arts and cultural exhibition spaces open for citizen participation, injecting new life into the monument.
The Cultural Heritage Department stated that the overall project progress has surpassed the halfway mark and is about to enter the critical finishing stage. While inspecting the office, exhibition, and outsourced operation spaces, Director Li specifically instructed the construction team to strictly implement industrial safety regulations. Regarding the interior decoration, high standards were set, requiring the comprehensive use of "F1 grade" low-formaldehyde system boards. He also directed that volatile substances such as adhesives and paints must be applied in advance, coupled with thorough ventilation measures, ensuring the health and safety of future staff and visiting citizens at the highest specifications.
The Cultural Heritage Department added that the city government has positioned the State Hall as a "public cultural space integrated into the lives of citizens." Through this monument restoration and adaptive reuse, Taichung State Hall will transform into an important venue that combines cultural depth with public shared value. This will not only help evoke citizens' identification with historical memory but also serve as a core engine driving the integrated development of cultural industries in the Old City, facilitating the overall revitalization and regeneration of the city and opening a new chapter in Taichung's cultural governance.
