The annual Mazu pilgrimage, held in the third lunar month, is the nation's greatest traditional religious and cultural event, expressing uniquely strong religious beliefs in central Taiwan. Since 2010, the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage has been designated an important folklore event by the Ministry of Culture, as it not only represents universal values in folklore beliefs but is also a national-level intangible cultural heritage. Taichung City takes the lead in the nationwide organization of the Mazu Cultural Festival. From after the lunar new year to before Mazu's birthday, it collaborates with major Taichung City temples to hold large-scale performances and traditional opera shows in front squares or ceremonial areas of 12 city temples that have nearly 200 years of history and/or are registered as cultural assets, expanding the scale and benefits of these temple-related activities.
