After serving local residents for 40 years, the Longjing Branch of Taichung Public Library ("Longjing Library", where "longjing" means "dragon well") has undergone a magnificent transformation. It reopened on August 25th as a more intelligent, convenient, safe, and accessible reading space for all ages.
Mayor Lu Shiow-yen has been actively promoting reading, allocating NT$100 million annually for three consecutive years for book purchases. The city has also allocated funds and actively sought central government subsidies to upgrade old libraries. The renovation of the Longjing Library was funded by NT$8.2 million from the Taichung City Government budget, with additional financial support from local enterprises, including Taiwan Power Company and Dragon Steel Corporation. This public-private partnership has successfully completed the library's upgrade, benefiting the residents.
"Although the Longjing Library is not large in size, it is fully equipped and has always been the public's favorite, with a high usage rate!" said Cultural Affairs Bureau Director Chen Chia-chun. To better meet current reading needs, the library has undergone seismic reinforcement and space rearrangement, optimizing the reading environment, improving accesibility, adding family-friendly facilities such as parent-child restrooms and breastfeeding rooms, and meeting United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by upgrading air conditioning equipment. The library has also implemented RFID systems and mobile check out functions, making it easier for the public to access smart and convenient lending services from the three libraries in Longjing District, Taichung City.
In addition, the new exterior design of the Longjing Library, inspired by the concept of books, gives the old building a fresh look. To celebrate the reopening, a series of "Reading with the Dragon" opening events have been planned, inviting the public to "come read with the dragon" and enjoy the "blessings of good books." The city government continues to collaborate with the private sector, including the construction of the Xidong Library (溪東圖書館) in Beitun District and the Hsu Liang-yu Memorial Library (許良宇紀念圖書館) in Dongshi District. In the future, the Nantun District will also see the addition of the Lobsang Library(羅布森圖書館), providing residents with reading services in an ecological education learning environment for all ages.
The Longjing Library is a three-story building with age-specific and audience-specific designs, including an infant and toddler area, a children's reading area, a teen reading area, a periodicals and newspapers area, and an elderly reading area. It offers 100 seatings, 60,000 books, four public computers, 17 laptop seats, self-service book check out and return machines, and mobile app book lending services. All residents are invited to visit and experience this new reading feast.
