Come experience the creative spirit and artistic energy of seniors in Taichung who embody the saying “Never too old to learn”! On the 12th, the Taichung City Government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau kicked off the 22nd Senior Citizen Art Exhibition at the Taichung City Seaport Art Center. The exhibition features 232 diverse works by seniors aged 60 and above, highlighting their life experiences and wisdom. Running until November 10th, this exhibition promises to provide an enriching artistic experience for all visitors.

The Taichung City Senior Citizen Art Exhibition, now in its 22nd year, is a vital platform for fostering lifelong learning and artistic creation. Hsiao Ching-ping, Chief Secretary of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, noted that this event aims to promote public participation in the arts and uphold the spirit of lifelong learning. Taichung citizens aged 60 and above who are passionate about creating art were invited to exhibit their works, ranging from calligraphy and ink wash painting to watercolor painting, oil painting, and sculpture. These pieces reflect the seniors’ zest for life and artistic pursuits, setting an example for younger generations and promoting the idea of “Never too old to learn.” Special thanks were also extended to the 26 district offices for their support, which made the event successful.

Participants in this year’s exhibition range from 60 to 98 years old, with 6 participants over 90 years old and 39 participants over 80 years old.  The oldest, 98-year-old Chen Chan-Ao, initially struggled with depression following his wife’s passing. However, through the encouragement of his family, he began taking painting classes and eventually integrated art into his life. Chen shared that painting is simply “a byproduct of life,” saying that being healthy and happy is what matters most. The Cultural Affairs Bureau noted that Chen’s oil painting Autumn Mountain Scenery portrays a stunning autumn landscape with a color palette and composition that echoes the romance of nature, allowing viewers to fully appreciate the beautiful intersection of natural vitality and artistic creation.

Another participant, Hsu Pi-Tzu, a retired elementary school teacher, has been passionately creating art since her retirement. From quilled paper flowers to Eastern Gouache and ink wash painting, her works have become increasingly refined and elegant, gradually developing a distinctive artistic style. Recently, she even held a solo exhibition at the Taichung City Seaport Art Center. In the Senior Citizen Art Exhibition, she will present her newest work"Graceful Dance", a fusion of quilled paper flowers and Eastern Gouache, showcasing the diverse styles and features along her artistic journey.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau highlighted that art bridges generations, benefiting the young and the elderly! The artworks in the Taichung City Senior Citizen Art Exhibition embody rich life wisdom, allowing seniors to share their passion for life, personal stories, and artistic achievements with different generations. The Bureau will continue organizing various arts and cultural events, giving seniors more chances to express themselves and learn new skills while encouraging younger generations to view these artworks and draw from the wisdom of the elderly. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Taichung City Seaport Art Center for this exhibition.
