Painting a New Chapter in Life: 91-Year-Old Chen Jing-De Courageously Pursues Dreams After Retirement

Life can also be vibrant and exciting after retirement—starting April 12 until May 4, the Tun District Art Center's Aesthetic Space will host a solo oil painting exhibition by 91-year-old artist Chen Jing-De. Featuring about 36 of his works, the exhibition celebrates the spirit of lifelong learning with the theme “Art Knows No Bounds, Creativity Knows No Age.” Everyone is warmly invited to come and experience the timeless beauty of both art and aging.
According to the Cultural Affairs Bureau, starting in 2025, Taiwan will officially become a super-aged society, with those over 65 accounting for more than 20% of the population. As more people begin to rethink life after retirement, 91-year-old Chen Jing-De stands out as an inspiring role model. A former architect who helped build the Ju Ming Museum and worked in the field for over five decades, Chen took up painting at the age of 70. From sketches and ink wash paintings to oil paintings, he has never stopped learning and creating art. His works have earned praise from both seniors and peers, and his solo exhibitions at venues like Seaport Art Center, Huludun Cultural Center, and Tun District Art Center have exemplified his unwavering spirit in the pursuit of art.
The oil paintings featured in Chen Jing-De’s solo exhibition offer a glimpse into his reflections on life. His art captures a deep appreciation for the innocence and beauty in the world. In Companionship, for instance, two fluffy white dogs huddle together, embodying loyalty and trust in friendship and relationships. In Dreamscape, the piece bursts with vivid colors that express a bold spirit of exploration and a yearning for a beautiful world. Many of his landscape paintings also act as snapshots from his life’s journey, preserving brief yet beautiful moments and the calm, peaceful mindset that comes with age and experience.
Back in 2020, Chen Jing-De was invited by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to give a speech just before the Double Ninth Festival. In his speech, he shared his deep love for art and the journey he's taken to follow that passion. “Life begins at seventy. Embrace life, bravely pursue your dreams, and fill your canvas with brilliant colors.” This message captures the essence of his artistic journey. All are warmly encouraged to visit the exhibition and experience the enduring creative spirit of an artist who continues to paint with youthful passion.
