“Taichung: A Journey into Arts and Culture” Invites Schools to Step Beyond the Classroom For Enriching Artistic Experiences - Registration For Final Phase Open Until June 20

The off-campus cultural experience program “Taichung: A Journey into Arts and Culture,” commissioned by the Ministry of Culture and organized by the Taichung City Government's Cultural Affairs Bureau, has been underway, with the second phase of activities taking place from February to May this year. Through the program, elementary to high school teachers and students are guided in exploring diverse artistic experiences, including music, performing arts, crafts, and history and culture. More than 3,000 participants have taken part so far, and the rich and engaging content has received widespread acclaim from both teachers and students. Registration for the final phase will open on June 2. Schools that have not yet participated are warmly encouraged to join, step beyond the classroom, and discover the beauty of the arts.
Director Chen Chia-chun of the Cultural Affairs Bureau noted that the “Taichung: A Journey into Arts and Culture” program offers a diverse and enriching array of activities, guiding teachers and students into cultural and arts venues to deeply engage with and uncover local stories. The program seeks to plant the seeds of artistic appreciation among students. One such activity, the “Urban Treasure Hunt Tour,” guides students through locations such as Taichung Park, ASEAN Square, Taiwan Sun Cake Museum, and Jiguang Food Street. Through games that require teamwork, students are encouraged to rediscover the city’s cultural heritage and historical context. The program also aspires to motivate young people to make use of the “Cultural Currency” to attend performances and support the performing arts through off-campus cultural experience programs.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau added that the second phase of the off-campus cultural experience program received enthusiastic acclaim. Highlights included “An Adventure with Superheroes – Music and Circus” at the Taichung Seaport Art Center, where Lit Art delivered a series of captivating performances combining contemporary circus and dance, earning resounding applause. At the Museum of Fiber Arts, the “Craft Aesthetics” and “Symphony of Craft” tours featured exhibitions of various weaving arts. Students not only explored these exhibitions but also engaged in hands-on rush weaving activities, deepening their understanding of Taichung's rush-weaving industry of the old times. Meanwhile, the “Wanderer Project” at the Tun District Art Center, presented by the resident team Uni Percussion, featured the performance “Where Water Lies Close” and a sound-body workshop. These activities introduced diverse applications of sound and its integration with body language, challenging and expanding students’ perceptions of sound. Participating teachers and students shared their impressions, commenting, “I never knew theater could be this fun!” and “I now realized that Taichung has so many cultural treasures!”
The “Taichung: A Journey into Arts and Culture” program not only broadens students’ artistic and cultural horizons but also reinforces the foundation of cultural education. According to statistics from the Ministry of Culture, Taichung City recorded a total of 6,796 cultural points used in 2024, ranking first among the six municipalities nationwide. To further promote cultural development at the grassroots level, Taichung City has actively supported the Ministry of Culture’s Cultural Currency initiative. As of 2025, over 80% of youths aged 13 to 22 in the city have successfully claimed their Cultural Currency. In addition, following the national high school entrance exams, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has arranged for the Taiwan Youth Band to perform in schools and provide information on how to use the Cultural Currency, thereby further fostering student participation and enthusiasm for the arts and cultural events.
Registration for the final phase of the “Taichung: A Journey into Arts and Culture” off-campus cultural experience program is open now until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20. The upcoming activities include “Taiwanese Aesthetics and Circus” at the Taichung Seaport Art Center, “An Artistic Imagination Journey for Elementary Students” at the Huludun Cultural Center, captivating performances by Lit Art and Sun Son Theatre, as well as arts and cultural experience tours at the Changhua Living Art Center and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. All schools across Taichung City are warmly encouraged to apply. Priority admission will be given to schools in rural areas. The list of selected schools will be announced on June 27.
