The Taichung Art Museum officially opened in December. To advance aesthetic education and put into practice the Green Museumbrary’s cross-disciplinary, integrated architectural design concept, the Museum has launched a new education outreach program, “Corner Missions Play Space Plug-in.” Open to families and audiences of all ages for shared learning, the program uses hands-on activities and interactive teaching tools to guide visitors in exploring the Green Museumbrary’s architectural spaces, the Taichung Art Museum’s collection, and the opening exhibitions, creating a new interactive viewing experience. The “Corner Missions” program combines the concepts of “Play Space” and “Plug-in,” introducing a new approach to children’s museum education. Moving beyond fixed exhibition galleries and classroom settings, it places five sets of mobile teaching tools in different corners throughout the Green Museumbrary. These tools are “plugged in” to the Taichung Art Museum’s galleries and public areas, and are also extended into the Taichung Public Library spaces, offering visitors more diverse and lightweight ways to experience art.
During the program development phase, the Taichung Art Museum adopted “Design Thinking” and “intergenerational inclusion” as its core principles. It invited art education specialists and artists to participate in planning and designing the teaching tools, and, through hands-on testing by different user groups including families, teenagers, and adults, it made step-by-step adjustments and revisions to develop tool content that is better suited to interactive experiences for audiences of all ages.
The teaching tools use modular furniture made of metal. In addition to echoing the architectural features of the Green Museumbrary’s exterior, the modules can be freely assembled according to the content of each set of teaching tools, the body scale of different users, and the size of the space. They can also be combined with the museum’s existing furniture and reused, creating a sustainable solution that embodies a low-carbon approach.
The “Corner Missions” program includes three permanent sets and two special-exhibition sets of teaching tools. Through three sets of themed tools, the permanent tools respond respectively to the interplay of light, shadow, and color within the Green Museumbrary’s architectural spaces, the exterior expanded metal mesh, and extended experiences related to the Taichung Art Museum’s collection. One of the tools is also installed in the children’s reading area of the Taichung Public Library, allowing visitors to experience art while reading.
The special-exhibition teaching tools are presented in conjunction with the Taichung Art Museum’s inaugural exhibition, “A Call of All Beings: See you tomorrow, same time, same place,” on view through April 12, 2026. Drawing on Taichung artist Hsing-Wan Chen’s mixed-media work The Song of the Earth No. 1 and National Living Treasure Ching-Shuang Wang’s lacquer work Standing Peacocks, the program has developed tactile mixed-media fabrics and sample boards featuring different lacquer techniques for visitors to touch, so the exhibition experience goes beyond static viewing and enables audiences to learn through touch about the materials used by the artists. A hands-on creation area is also set up on site, providing a platform for visitors to unleash their creativity and engage in dialogue with the artworks.
“Corner Missions Play Space Plug-in” offers visitors multiple ways to explore, providing a deeper museum-going experience and enriching audience learning. The public is welcome to pick up a leaflet at the service counter on the first floor of the Taichung Green Museumbrary and follow the leaflet’s guidance to explore “Corner Missions” throughout the venue, collecting moments of experience that are uniquely their own.
