Taichung City Seaport Art Center will grandly present “A Nonagenarian · Artistic Realms” — Lin Chih-Hsin Solo Exhibition of Oil Paintings and Sculptures in Exhibition Room A from January 10 to March 8, 2026, and an opening ceremony is scheduled for January 17, 2026. This exhibition was originally conceived as an important creative retrospective marking artist Chih-Hsin Lin’s 90th year; however, Mr. Lin sadly passed away on December 31, 2025, leaving the art community with deep regret. This exhibition has also become an important presentation paying tribute to his lifelong artistic achievements, and the public is sincerely invited to enter the galleries to commemorate a national-treasure-level artist who responded with profound affection through art to the land and the times.
In his remarks, Shih Chun-fu , Deputy Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Taichung City Government, stated that Lin Chih-Hsin was born in the rural countryside of Tainan and, from an early age, was immersed in nature and local cultural traditions; the chirping of birds and fragrance of flowers, and the scent of soil, grasses, and trees profoundly shaped his creative sensibilities and artistic vision. While studying at Tainan Teachers College (now National University of Tainan), at a time when Impressionist art was in vogue, its rich vocabulary of color and its gaze upon everyday life became the unchanging foundation of his lifelong creative practice. In particular, deeply influenced by the French Impressionist master Pierre Bonnard, Lin Chih-Hsin consistently upheld his own feelings and lived experience as the core of his work, maintaining an unwavering style amid shifting trends; through color and brushwork, he recorded what he saw before him and what he felt within, leaving a genuine and warm imprint on his time.
Lin Jun-Hsien , the son of artist Lin Chih-Hsin , stated that, in the past, touring exhibitions of the long-scroll woodcut print “Greeting Matsu” and the long-scroll oil painting “Formosa the Beautiful” occupied a large amount of exhibition space, leaving many valuable works with few opportunities to be seen by the public; for this exhibition at the Taichung City Seaport Art Center, a special selection has been made of multiple portrait and landscape oil paintings, as well as sculptures and Koji pottery works, to fully present the artist’s diverse and rich creative oeuvre, which also reflects a long-cherished wish that his father had kept in mind in recent years and hoped to realize.
The Taichung City Seaport Art Center noted that Lin Chih-Hsin took “Deeply Attached to the Homeland” as the core of his creative work throughout his life, and left a precious mark in art history with the 248-meter-long oil painting scroll Formosa the Beautiful: Images of Taiwan in the 1950s; although this work is not featured in the present exhibition, audiences can still appreciate his diverse creations, including floral works, still lifes, nude figure works, and sculptures, fully presenting the artist’s profound accomplishments in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art.
Lin Chih-Hsin first gained renown for his black-and-white and color prints, and achieved international recognition through the world-record-setting long-scroll woodcut print “Greeting Matsu”; his works have been exhibited in multiple countries across Asia and Europe and have received broad acclaim. Beyond his deep engagement with local culture, he also traveled to 42 countries in Europe and the Americas, drawing on the strengths of different schools of painting and transforming foreign landscapes into creative nourishment, forming an important creative trajectory of “Artistic Travels Around the World.” In recent years, he further devoted himself to sculpture, ranging from Taiwan native cattle and the human nude to a Buddha statue series, each work vivid in both form and spirit and imbued with profound cultural heritage; this solo exhibition specially presents selected sculptures, showcasing Lin Chih-Hsin’s comprehensive artistic vitality.
Taichung City Seaport Art Center noted that “A Nonagenarian · Artistic Realms” is not only an art exhibition, but also a life narrative of an artist responding to the land and the times through a lifetime of work. Through the interwoven presentation of oil paintings and sculptures, audiences can experience Lin Chih-Hsin’s profound and sincere affection for Taiwan, as well as his exemplary spirit of staying true to himself on his artistic path and creating unremittingly throughout his life. All are cordially invited to attend and pay the deepest respect to a master of his generation.
