Huludun Cultural Volunteers Promote Indigo Dyeing Craftsmanship, Showcasing Taichung’s Urban Aesthetics

To deepen place-based aesthetic education, promote traditional crafts, and expand international cultural exchanges, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Taichung City Government and the Taichung City Huludun Cultural Center Volunteer Team have, since 2018, continuously advanced the “Extraordinary Volunteer Artistry” indigo dyeing outreach initiative. This program brings the traditional art of indigo dyeing into communities, schools, and public spaces, ensuring that culture exists not only in exhibition and performance venues but also truly integrates into citizens' daily lives. It has become a key highlight that showcases Taichung’s cultural soft power.

Chia-Chun Chen, Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Taichung City Government, stated that since Mayor Shiow-Yen Lu took office, the City Government has actively promoted the “Cultural Roots, Art in Everyday Life” policy. The “Extraordinary Volunteer Artistry” indigo dyeing program is a concrete example of this initiative, linking volunteer expertise, local characteristics, public participation, and private-sector energy to integrate culture into everyday community life. Through indigo-dyeing DIY experiences, the program has established a distinctive cultural-experience hub that not only attracts international exchange groups from the United States and Japan for hands-on participation but has also been invited to participate in the Taiwan-Japan-Korea international natural dyeing pop-up exhibition. This success has helped build a cultural brand that combines educational, tourism, and international exchange value.

Dian-Ling Wu, a dedicated volunteer who has long promoted indigo dyeing, shared that through repeated teaching and exchanges, she has deeply experienced the power of craftsmanship to connect people. A piece of indigo-dyed cloth can serve as a shared cross-cultural language, allowing international visitors to appreciate the delicacy and warmth of Taiwanese culture. Tsun-Chi Chu, captain of the Volunteer Team, stated that over the years, the team has continuously improved its techniques and teaching capabilities, cultivating numerous professional indigo-dyeing instructors. This effort has not only expanded volunteers’ artistic career opportunities but also helped build a stable pool of cultural talent for Taichung, demonstrating tangible results of the City Government’s promotion of sustainable cultural development.

Huludun Cultural Center further explained that indigo-dyeing DIY experience classes are offered on a fixed monthly schedule. For a fee of NT$200 per person, participants can complete one finished piece. Group reservations are also available. The public, including families with children, is warmly invited to step into the world of indigo dyeing  and experience the charm of Taichung’s craft culture in everyday life.
