On January 28, Minister of Culture Li Yuan led a delegation to Taichung City to review the results of the “First Top 100 Cultural Bases” program, held by the Ministry of Culture in 2025. Out of 1,026 nominations nationwide, six bases in Taichung were selected. Accompanied by Shi Chun-fu, Deputy Director of the Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau, the delegation visited key locations including Fusion Space 1962(富興工廠1962) and Central Bookstore(中央書局).

Minister Li praised the Taichung bases for their distinctive local character and autonomous initiatives, noting that the city’s cultural bases effectively combine industrial transformation, urban memory, and community participation. He emphasized that cultural development requires collaboration among central and local governments as well as civil organizations. “Taichung’s six cultural bases cover diverse categories and are important spaces for experiencing the city’s historical and cultural heritage,” Li said. “The greatest strength of the cultural bases in Taichung’s old town lies in their connection to history. Moving forward, these bases could link with other Ministry institutions and eventually develop into ‘cultural parks,’ supporting the sustainable growth of local culture.”

Deputy Director Shi highlighted the six selected Taichung bases: Central Bookstore, Yuemei Sugar Industry Cultural Route Base(月眉糖廠文化路徑基地), Beitun New Village - Taichung Military Kindred Village Museum(北屯新村—台中市眷村文物館),  Fusion Space 1962,Tonglin Community Development Association in Wufeng District(台中市霧峰桐林社區發展協會), and Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden(霧峰林家宮保第園區). Shi noted that these bases not only have deep historical significance but also showcase Taichung’s rich cultural diversity through innovative management and programming.

Shi also outlined recent major cultural developments under Mayor Lu Shiow-yen, including the openings of Dongshi Hsu Liang-Yu Library(許良宇圖書館) and Xidong Library(溪東圖書館) , as well as the  Taichung Green Museumbrary(台中綠美圖), which has welcomed over 700,000 visitors since its soft launch. Upcoming projects include the Lobsang Library(羅布森圖書館), Tadao Ando Children's Book Forest(安藤忠雄童書之森), and the Little Pig Arts Base(小豬藝文基地). On behalf of Mayor Lu, Shi presented Minister Li and the Ministry team with a “Taichung MOOMIN ON” lantern symbolizing happiness, inviting them to revisit Taichung during Lunar New Year to experience the city’s vibrant cultural scene.

To enhance cross-site collaboration, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government has designated the Fiber Arts Museum as a hub for cultural bases, launching the “Taichung Cultural Bases Index Special Exhibition” in the museum’s main hall. The exhibition showcases key artifacts, creative works, and important documents from each site, and will be complemented by upcoming collaborative art projects and cultural workshops.

From now until the end of December, visitors who tour all six cultural bases and collect stamps can redeem an exclusive limited-edition notebook at the Fiber Arts Museum, encouraging the public to engage with Taichung’s cultural spaces and document their exploration.
