As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, the Taichung City Government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau has planned a diverse and vibrant lineup of arts and cultural activities. The program combines performing arts, festive experiences, family-friendly activities, hands-on workshops, markets, and reading promotions. Starting June 13, these events will take place at various cultural centers, the Taichung City Seaport Art Center, the Taichung Fiber Craft Museum, and public libraries across the city.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau invites families and visitors of all ages to step into Taichung’s cultural venues to enjoy a fulfilling Dragon Boat Festival holiday. From circus performances and dragon boat-themed challenges to sachet-making workshops, concerts, and festive reading events, participants can experience the charm of traditional culture and the vibrancy of the local arts scene.
According to the Bureau, the Tun District Art Center will present the "Zong Arts at Tun District: Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival" series. The program begins at 3:00 p.m. on June 13 at the outdoor amphitheater, featuring the "Creative Percussion Lab," which will use everyday objects and percussion instruments to deliver an inventive rhythm performance. The "Pegasus Circus Theatre" will also present a lively circus show for families, combining magic, hula hoops, rola bola, and other playful elements. The venue will host a "Dragon Boat Festival Customs Story Exhibition" and a fun challenge game, "Zong Arts Push Game." Participants who successfully complete the challenge will receive a limited-edition lucky rice dumpling charm, and those who complete a post-event survey can redeem a thermal bag. On June 28, "Storytelling with Teacher Dapeng" will guide families through the history and traditional customs of the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Huludun Cultural Center will launch street performances at 4:30 p.m. on June 13, featuring a performer who combines football skills with musical rhythm. "Aerial Spider-Man" Ko Chung-hsien will also bring his "Between Balance" low-altitude tightrope walking show, along with a hands-on experience for children. On June 19, the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, the center will host a festive challenge event featuring interactive games inspired by dragon boats, rice dumplings, The Legend of the White Snake, and traditional folk customs. Dragon boat pulling and twist-car races will also be held, inviting everyone to enjoy the festive atmosphere together.
The Bureau noted that the Taichung City Seaport Art Center and the Qingshui Military Dependents’ Village Cultural Park are jointly presenting the "Village Healing: A Midsummer Dragon Boat Festival" series, which blends festival traditions with the concept of healing and slow living. On June 14, the "Tiger Sachet: Traditional Sachet-Making Workshop" will introduce participants to the cultural significance of these aromatic charms. On June 20, the "Smile Taiwanese Narrative Singing Troupe" will present "Listening to Folk Songs at the Dragon Boat Festival," recreating festival legends such as the stories of Qu Yuan, The Legend of the White Snake, and Cao E through traditional singing and storytelling.
Additional incense-making and mugwort craft workshops will be offered, blending traditional wisdom with healing experiences. Musical and theatrical performances by the Holiday Band, Yun Xi Shui Yue Zheng Ensemble, Wu Dao-en, Wu Cheng-han, and others will take place throughout the event period. The "Qingjuan Market" will also be held, bringing together cultural and creative crafts, specialty foods, and lifestyle goods to create a festive community gathering filled with artistic charm.
Furthermore, the Taichung Fiber Craft Museum will launch the "New Fiber Art: Rice Dumpling Coin Purse" workshop on the afternoon of June 14, where participants will use cotton thread to create a three-dimensional, rice dumpling-shaped coin purse that is as practical as it is festive.
From June 1 to 27, the Taichung Public Library will host the "Fragrance of Books and Rice Dumplings: Reading into Midsummer" series. Programs include midsummer wellness lectures, Chinese herbal mosquito-repellent sachets, creative dragon boat DIY activities, and Taiwanese-language picture book storytelling. Through reading and cultural exploration, the library invites the public to discover the wisdom and blessings of the Dragon Boat Festival season.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau reminds the public that the Dragon Boat Festival holiday falls on June 19–21. Opening hours for arts and cultural venues, along with detailed event information, are available on the Cultural Affairs Bureau website and the official websites of each individual venue.
