Shuinan Quarterly -Memory and Art in the Flow of Time

Taichung Central Park (臺中中央公園), a place that carries the stories of the past, bears witness to the transformation from Shuinan Airport (水湳機場) into an urban oasis. Yet amid all these changes, some memories have not been forgotten and are still waiting to be awakened once again. For most people, Shuinan Airport may be no more than a footnote in history. But for some, it is an unforgettable chapter of youth and a memory deeply tied to this land.

The traces of history do not need to be deliberately searched for. They are hidden in yellowed old photographs and in the memories of elders who once worked and lived at Shuinan Airport. The creator of the public artwork "My Story in Shuinan" (我在水湳的故事), Tao Ya-Lun (陶亞倫), is a pioneering Taiwanese new media artist. Using AR (augmented reality), to explore the possibilities of public art, he guides the public in understanding the past and present of the Shuinan Economic and Trade Park (水湳經貿園區) from the perspectives of the past, the present, and the future. Through interviews with eight elders who still hold deep feelings for Shuinan Airport, he pieces together the traces of the former airport through their memories and recreates the light and shadows of that time.

Although Shuinan Airport no longer exists, can its image be brought back before people’s eyes through technology? That is precisely the idea behind "My Story in Shuinan". Through digital technologies, people are able to see what the old airport once looked like as they stroll through the park, and even hear the stories of those who once lived and worked there.

For most people, Taichung Central Park is a vast green ecological park. Yet through the oral histories shared by the interviewees, the history of the airport reappears before the public, and the past suddenly comes vividly back to life. These stories are not only personal memories, but also the collective memory of a city. The public art project "My Story in Shuinan" is an artistic experiment. The maintenance of digital art, technological development, and public acceptance are all unknown challenges.
