Mayor Lu attends Jason Hu’s new book launch and praises Hu’s exemplary governance and city’s glory.

The book launch event for I Am Jason Hu, Reporting for Duty Today!, published by Commonwealth Publishing and currently ranked No. 1 on the new release list at Books.com.tw, was held on June 14 at Taichung THE LIN Hotel. The book reflects on former Mayor Jason Hu’s 13-year tenure and life journey, capturing his sincerity and leadership style. The event drew a large and enthusiastic audience, with all seats filled. Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen attended the event and shared heartfelt remarks, describing former Mayor Hu as both a senior and partner in her political career. As two individuals who have both served as mayor of Taichung, she noted that they have witnessed the city's transformation together. Mayor Lu also encouraged the public to purchase the book and personally discover the exemplary legacy of this distinguished politician.
Mayor Lu shared a memorable anecdote from former Mayor Jason Hu’s early mayoral campaign. To save on campaign expenses, he voluntarily performed in a short play during the opening of his campaign headquarters, portraying the patriotic general Yue Fei to symbolize his dedication to the country. Mayor Lu, in turn, didn’t care about her image and played Yue Fei’s mother in the skit. She brought photos from that performance to the event, offering the audience a glimpse. She went on to praise former Mayor Hu as one of the earliest politicians in Taiwan to truly connect with the people. Not only was he willing to take on theatrical roles to draw attention, but he also embraced innovation, had an approachable personality, and was highly attuned to public opinions. His conduct broke the mold of a traditional government official.
“A model of statesmanship!” Mayor Lu remarked, praising former Mayor Jason Hu for his outstanding achievements during his time in office. She noted that even amid changes in political parties, he never criticized his successors nor interfered with her administration over the past six and a half years—an embodiment of true political maturity and grace. Mayor Lu expressed her deep admiration for former Mayor Hu’s humility and low-profile demeanor throughout the years, calling him one of the most exemplary political figures in her eyes. She also recognized him as a trailblazer who led Taichung onto the international stage and laid the foundation for the city's global competitiveness. She described the biography as a powerful testament to his legacy and encouraged everyone to read the book to gain deeper insight into the story of this remarkable politician. Lu also wished the publication great success.
Former Mayor Jason Hu remarked that serving as Mayor of Taichung was the most significant chapter of his political career. Holding the book launch event in his hometown was especially heartwarming, and he expressed his sincere gratitude to Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen for her personal attendance. He offered high praise for Mayor Lu’s steady and pragmatic approach to governance, which has led to remarkable achievements in urban development, social welfare, cultural advancement, and sustainability. Under her leadership, Taichung has consistently recorded high levels of public satisfaction with urban governance. He further commended Mayor Lu for her keen awareness of public sentiment and responsiveness to the needs of citizens, demonstrating firm and outstanding leadership. Her efforts have made Taichung a livable and joyful city, and as a resident himself, he said he feels a deep sense of pride.
Former Mayor Jason Hu also remarked with a smile that, despite having served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Taiwan’s representative to the United States, he had never originally planned to publish a biography. He expressed special gratitude to Kao Hsi-chun, founder of Commonwealth Publishing, for his encouragement in bringing the book to fruition. Mr. Kao views biographies as a form of sharing and considers sharing itself to be an invaluable act. Inspired by this philosophy, Hu decided to openly share his political experiences and personal life philosophy. He noted that during his 13 years as Mayor of Taichung, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to advancing culture, economic development, and international engagement. While his efforts were recognized, he also candidly acknowledged regrets, including the failure to realize the Taichung Guggenheim Museum project and his unsuccessful bid for a mayoral second term. These experiences are honestly documented in the book, which he hopes will help readers—especially the younger generation—gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and significance inherent in political practice and urban governance.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau noted that during former Mayor Hu’s tenure, he upheld the philosophy that “culture is a good business” and actively promoted cultural policies. These efforts included the founding of the Taichung Jazz Festival, which has grown over more than 20 years into one of the major international music events. In 2013, the city held an international design competition for the Taichung Green Museumbrary, setting a record for the highest number of participants in Taiwan. The Taichung Green Museumbrary was designed by SANAA, recipients of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, resulting in Taiwan’s first integrated art museum and library building. This building, developed over more than a decade, is scheduled to officially open on December 13 this year. Citizens are sincerely invited to witness together this brand-new cultural venue that blends art and knowledge.
According to the Cultural Affairs Bureau, former Mayor Hu, having grown up in a military dependents’ village, has traversed a path through diplomacy, politics, and local governance. His book, I Am Jason Hu, Reporting for Duty Today!, sincerely shares behind-the-scenes stories from his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Representative to the United States, and Mayor of Taichung. It delicately chronicles this life journey, beginning from humble origins and advancing into the turbulent arena of politics. The book also showcases Jason Hu’s commitment to public service and his dedication, providing valuable insights and historical testimony for readers interested in public affairs and urban development.
