Shuinan Quarterly - Taichung Central Park Visitor Center “A Treasure Where History, Technology, and Art Converge”

The Taichung Central Park (臺中中央公園) Visitor Center was originally designed with three climate simulation rooms, featuring exhibitions on climate change, global warming, biodiversity, and related issues. It also uses technology driven experiences such as interactive digital panels, virtual reality, and immersive audiovisual installations to reconnect visitors with the historical memory of Shuinan Airport (水湳機場) and recreate the former airport’s glory days.

On the plaza above the parking lot on the other side of the Visitor Center, even more surprises await. Two distinctive public artworks stand there. One is "Avian Horticulture (雀鳥園藝師)" by American artist Stacy Levy. Its colorful flower tree forms extend along the walkway, making visitors feel as if they are strolling through a vibrant garden. In addition to adding color to the surroundings, this work also creates places where birds can freely perch and rest.

In nature, many plants rely on birds to disperse their seeds. After birds eat fruit and later excrete the seeds, the seeds can reach places the plants could never access on their own, where they then take root, sprout, and gradually expand their range. This work is designed around that principle. Pods are installed at elevated points and are regularly filled with fallen leaves and soil, allowing insects to hatch there and in turn attracting birds to feed. As birds come to rest around the artwork, they are more likely to bring seeds to the site, helping to accelerate the natural greening of the area.

Another work is " Light Ring (光洵環)", created by the artist team UxU Studio (有用主張). Inspired by Shuinan, the work presents both flowing and still water within the same piece, echoing the site’s past while also reflecting its limitless future possibilities. The artwork uses two circles to define a space and combines different materials with lighting design to create two distinct spatial settings, an inner dynamic space and an outer still space. Inside the circles are LED lighting fixtures. As the colors shift over time, they represent the changing seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. By stepping inside, visitors can experience the changing play of light and shadow through the four seasons.

Taichung Central Park is a space full of surprise, enjoyment, and educational value. The Visitor Center brings together history, aviation, and recreation, while the outdoor area offers many public artworks to appreciate, making the park an ideal destination for outings with family and friends. Blending history, technology, and art, it offers visitors a journey full of energy and inspiration. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the glorious flying days of the past while also enjoying the artistic atmosphere of the outdoor lawns.
