The Taiwan Soka Association(台灣創價學會) is presenting "Moving Forward Against the Wind: The Kao Yi-Feng Memorial Retrospective"(逆風前行—高一峰紀念展) at the Taichung Gallery of the Soka Art Museum(創價美術館臺中館), and the exhibition officially opened on May 31.
Born in Xugou, Shanxi, Kao Yi-Feng(高一峰) studied in the Department of Western Painting at Jing-Hua Fine Art School(京華美術專科學校) in his early years, where he built a solid foundation in drawing and oil painting. After moving to Taiwan in 1949, he taught at Taichung First Senior High School(臺中一中) and the National Taiwan University of Arts(國立臺灣藝術大學), exerting a profound influence on postwar art education and the development of ink art in Taiwan.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government explained that this exhibition features a carefully selected group of Kao’s important works, including calligraphy, ink painting, oil painting, and valuable archival materials, offering a comprehensive presentation of the development of his artistic practice across different periods. Kao blended the foundations of Western painting with the spirit of Eastern ink art to develop a highly distinctive personal artistic language. The spirited horses, water buffalo, northern frontier landscapes, and rural figures of Taiwan that appear in his work embody his deep reflections on the land, human relationships, and life itself. His bold and powerful brushwork also reveals the unyielding spirit with which he faced adversity throughout his life.
Deputy Mayor Cheng Chao-Hsin stated that Kao Yi-Feng had deep ties to Taichung. He taught and created art here, nurtured countless artistic talents, and made far reaching contributions to the development of arts and culture in central Taiwan. This memorial exhibition brings his works back to the city where he once devoted so much of his life. It is not only a tribute to a senior master of art, but also a reawakening of Taichung’s cultural memory. The Taichung Gallery of the Soka Art Museum is an important Art spots venue in Taichung, providing residents with an excellent everyday setting in which to encounter art close to home, allowing outstanding Taiwanese artists to be seen by the public and enriching the city’s aesthetic life.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government added that "Moving Forward Against the Wind: The Kao Yi-Feng Memorial Retrospective" will be on view from now until September 20. Members of the public and art lovers are sincerely invited to visit and experience the radiant life spirit and artistic charm of Kao Yi-Feng as he continued moving forward against the wind.
