With the Mid-Autumn Festival just around the corner, a wide range of arts and cultural events will take place across Taichung, from the mountain and coastal areas to the Tun District and the city center. The Taichung City Government Cultural Affairs Bureau has brought together cultural venues across the city to launch a series of Mid-Autumn Festival programs. Highlights include the first-ever “Dadun Calligraphy Art Festival” at Dadun Cultural Center, as well as projection-mapped glove puppetry, circus performances, fiber art, parent-child reading activities, and hands-on workshops, inviting residents to celebrate the festival through a variety of cultural experiences.

Dadun Cultural Center will hold its inaugural “Dadun Calligraphy Art Festival,” featuring a series of activities inspired by the Mid-Autumn Festival, including a call for entries, exhibitions, hands-on workshops, and fun competitions. The exhibition “Autumn Moon in Ink — Mid-Autumn Calligraphy Open Call Exhibition” will run from September 15 to October 15. On October 11, the center will also host “Tea, Calligraphy and Tea-Sealing Fun — Creative Tea Bag DIY,” bringing calligraphy beyond the page and transforming it into an interactive festive experience that visitors can appreciate, create, and enjoy firsthand.

Families looking for lively performances can also head outdoors and “fly to the moon” together. On the afternoon of September 19, Tun District Art Center will present the “Fly to the Moon Party,” featuring the popular children’s channel MOMO Family and Unique Contemporary Circus. The event will also include a Mid-Autumn-themed story exhibition, interactive games, and limited-edition giveaways.

On the same day, Huludun Cultural Center will host “Mid-Autumn Celebration at Huludun with Projection Mapping — A Love Beyond Restraint.” Traditional children’s games and family challenge activities will take place in the afternoon. In the evening, Taichung Sheng Wuzhou Hand Puppet Theater will combine traditional glove puppetry with animated visuals and 3D projection mapping to present a fresh interpretation of traditional puppet theater in the outdoor plaza.

At the Museum of Fiber Arts, Taichung, the changing light of autumn will become part of the exhibition experience. Japanese textile artist Aya Yamanaka’s large-scale installation, Counterpoint of Translucent Light — From Summer Light into Autumn, draws inspiration from museum collection artist Liu Chiu-se’s Summer Afternoon at the Harbor City. Using dyeing and screen-printing techniques, Yamanaka has created 16 long panels of semi-transparent silk, which form ever-changing scenes in the first-floor lobby as natural light shifts throughout the day.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, visitors to the museum who check in on their personal Facebook account and upload a photo of themselves with the installation may redeem a limited-edition gift at the service counter, while supplies last.

In addition, the Taichung Public Library’s Green Museumbrary Main Library will present a “Moonlight Reading Party” on September 19, combining themed picture books with a DIY moon lamp activity. On the same day, the Wuqi Parent-Child Library will present English picture-book storytelling under the theme “Mid-Autumn Myths and Magical Tales.” Meanwhile, on September 5, the Longjing Shanding Branch Library partnered with the Taiwan Kamishibai Promotion Association to present “Tasty Savory Mooncakes,” a special Mid-Autumn storytelling session in Taiwanese, giving children an opportunity to discover the festival through different languages and stories.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau noted that this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival programs span classic folk songs, calligraphy, glove puppetry, traditional crafts, exhibitions, and parent-child reading activities, with each venue offering its own distinctive way to celebrate. Residents are invited to plan their own Mid-Autumn arts and culture excursion based on their interests.
